About Us

Not Abandoned is not just an anti-trafficking organization. We are an organization that labors to empower women who have been exploited. It’s not about a rescue from trafficking. It’s about providing tools for a woman to regain and maintain her freedom. We hold the deep conviction that no matter how messy, complex, or slow her recovery process is, that she can and will come to know, she is not abandoned.

Not Abandoned endeavors to help empower the most vulnerable through steady support, trauma-informed care, and practical training opportunities to live a life of physical, emotional, and spiritual freedom and purpose.

We choose not to label the women we work with as trafficking victims because that is not their true identity. Exploitation is something that happened to them, it does not need to define who they are. They were victimized but they are not victims, and yes, there is a difference. Those who oppress, force or manipulate the vulnerable to wear a cloak of a different identity, sometimes that of prostitute or slave. As a society it is easy to only see the false identity, judging her without truly seeing the real person behind the façade. We are here to help tear down the façade, rediscover the truth, and support these women on their path to freedom.

Our vision is to ensure that any person exploited is Not Abandoned.

Our mission is to facilitate sustaining freedom for the exploited by providing practical opportunities for empowerment through holistic programming.

In order to maintain a quality of excellence these values are non-negotiables in how we operate:

1. We will continue to be an action-driven organization that is committed to reaching the most vulnerable and exploited in the darkest trafficking hubs of the world. We will not just talk about it, but we will be present among them to offer emotional, physical, and spiritual freedom and hope.

2.  We will not abandon those victimized, no matter how messy, difficult, or complex their life circumstances become. Upon engaging with them in their lives we offer our commitment of care and we will remain alongside the traumatized with practical help and unconditional love.

3.  We will maintain the priority of strategic partnerships with others who are like-minded to grow effective and reproducible avenues for freedom and empowerment.

4.  We will not allow ourselves to grow stagnant. We will keep this organization flexible, relevant, and humble so that we may be sensitive to new opportunities and respond with agility when the unexpected transpires with the exploited whom we serve.

5.  We will operate with integrity and handle resources wisely, in a spirit of openness and transparency.

In the late 1990s a research team traveled to the country of Thailand to understand first-hand the issues of sex trafficking. It was not only seeing its prevalence in the nation, but also the sheer magnitude of the sex industry. It was clear very quickly that Thailand was the global epicenter of human trafficking, which set a pattern on a global level for the exploitation of the most vulnerable. As a result, Not Abandoned was started for the purpose of bringing practical solutions, spiritual guidance, and hope to exploited and vulnerable communities.

From its inception, the Not Abandoned team has strived to provide practical holistic solutions starting from meeting a woman directly at her place of work and carrying through to her utilizing our programs tools to rebuild a healthy physical, emotional and spiritual life balance. The team endeavors to walk alongside the vulnerable, stand with them, build community, provide practical programs through the employment educational center in Pattaya. This process leads them to a full life of freedom regaining their self-esteem and full identity.

In the past decade, Not Abandoned has developed two focal points of work in Thailand. One in the city of Pattaya, the epicenter of global sex trafficking of the world. Anotherin the city of Korat, the doorway city of the Issan region where 85% of trafficked Thai women are recruited to be exploited. In the region of Korat, a team focuses on prevention programs, stopping young females from being recruited as well as helping recovered victims with their family reintegration into their communities.

This has been a successful model that is now being replicated in other regions in Europe with high levels of human exploitation. Not Abandoned is driven by the fact there are still many vulnerable peoples working in evenings of despair that deserve mornings of freedom. The vision of its founders, as well as full-time staff, is to continue building this mission in partnership with others who are like-minded and are also driven by the fact that the most vulnerable and exploited are still out there, alone and desolate.

Jeff McKinley

Jeff McKinley is the Founder and Executive Director of Not Abandoned. Born and raised in Spain to American missionaries, he worked there planting churches for 12 years. Jeff was also actively working in Morocco at that time developing socio-economic community programs for under-developed children and their families. He later worked for 14 years as the mission pastor of a megachurch in Washington State where he developed numerous global projects addressing the issues of poverty, social injustice, exploited communities, and economic sustainability in underdeveloped countries. He attained his training and higher education in Spain and the U.S., obtaining a MA in Theology and Leadership Development.

His first-hand knowledge of cross-cultural living and experience working with disadvantaged populations allows Jeff to offer unique insight into developing partnerships and working to help vulnerable peoples. Some of these very experiences led him to the doorstep of sexual exploitation and trafficking in Thailand. Which is where he saw the crude reality of lives being destroyed by the commercial sex industry: women exploited for financial gain, then abandoned, with little to no chance for a life of freedom. This reality was the leading factor in Jeff founding Not Abandoned in 2008.

In Jeff’s 35+ years of cross-cultural work, one of his greatest joys has been found in mobilizing over 7,000 individuals for work across the globe to care for diverse communities. Through Not Abandoned, Jeff endeavors to empower the most vulnerable who are fighting injustice and the barriers of exploitation in their lives with practical hands-on care, spiritual support, and training opportunities to live a life of true freedom from exploitation.

Her greatest joy is working to personally help remove women from this oppressive life.

Because of her global experience, she has been instrumental in shaping the vision and mission of Not Abandoned and its work around the world she values the importance of research and awareness; however, Alex’s main drive and focus are to find practical, innovative, and hands-on solutions to the crime of trafficking and exploitation and the recovery of victims. She has worked on national and overseas awareness campaigns and training programs for law enforcement agencies, embassies, community members, social service providers, and cross-cultural volunteers. Alex is also a survivor of domestic minor sex trafficking and is passionate about using her personal experiences to be a strong voice for the silenced.
